Amanzimtoti detective awarded for convictions

A detective sergeant based at the Amanzimtoti Police Station was recognised and awarded for his dedication and commitment to solving crime.

DETECTIVE Sergeant Sibongiseni Zithumani of the Amanzimtoti Police Station was awarded second runner-up for Detective and Forensic Service Employee of the Year: Level 5 to Level 7 at the recent eThekwini District Excellence Awards.

His attention to detail with investigative work, which resulted in numerous convictions and seven case closures, earned him this prestigious honour.

“Over the years, I’ve received many certificates of excellence but never anything like this. I work at night and after hours on the cases assigned to me, so it feels great to have my dedication and commitment recognised. I am also so thankful and honoured,” said Zithumani.

Following his dream and passion for justice, he started as a constable in 2007 at KwaMakhutha Police Station before joining Umlazi’s trio task team and later climbing the ranks at Amanzimtoti where he has now served 17 years.

Zithumani handles serious and violent crimes such as house robbery, business robbery, murder and carjacking.

“About a month before joining the force, I was hijacked at gunpoint. I decided I never wanted to be a victim again, and now, I give it my all to ensure justice is served and I make a difference in my town and country,” he said.

Some of his achievements include the 2018 recovery of nearly a million rands worth of stolen property bound for export and the arrest of a murder suspect in just one day in 2016.

“Despite the challenges and dangers of the job, such as death threats, I remain dedicated to my work,” said Zithumani.

He added that the Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum, which won CPF of the Year at the awards, plays a crucial role by being the eyes and the ears on the ground for the police and detectives.
