1st Amanzimtoti scout hosts ‘trashin’ show for cause

With community service at the forefront of obtaining a Springbok Award in scouting, Rebecca Salmond organised a recyclable materials fashion show fundraiser in aid of Hearts of Toti.

THE 1st Amanzimtoti Scouts’ Rebecca Salmond recently organised a creative Trashin Show as part of her community service to obtain the highest award in scouting – the Springbok Award.

In her effort to fulfil the community-service requirement, she chose to support the non-profit organisation, Hearts of Toti, by raising funds through a fun event.

The unique fashion show featured children from the group and the members of the public, who wowed the audience and judges by strutting down the runway in outfits made entirely from recyclable materials.

Some of the creative outfits included newspaper pants, 2l bottle shoes, a bubble-wrap dress, plastic bag skirts and cardboard armour.

Parents, children and scouts start to fill the hall for the Trashin Show.
The Springbok Award requires scouts to complete tasks in areas like adventure, safety awareness, living outdoors, service, scout skills and personal development.

“My other projects include constructing a braai at her base, organising a hike and camp, and conducting talks and first-aid training,” she said.

The 16-year-old began her scouting journey in 2017 and joined the Amanzimtoti base in 2021.

“I enjoy scouting because of all the new experiences and friendships you make along the way. Scouting involves many different things, from first aid and knotting to survival and many outdoor-related activities. We also have presentations and discussions covering a vast number of topics,” she said.

In addition to the show, there was a donation box for food and clothing. The funds raised from the event will be used to purchase essential items for Hearts of Toti, which Rebecca will also help distribute to individuals and families in need.
