THE Glenwood High School Old Boys’ Association donated about 300 books to Umbogintwini Primary School on August 14, after a fire destroyed their library.
Ivan Beetge, a member of the Old Boys’ Association, who grew up in Amanzimtoti, said, “When we heard about the fire, we reached out to the Amanzimtoti Lions Club to find out how we can help. We organised a book drive, connecting with other schools and role-players in the Durban area,” he said, adding that they are always finding ways to support and help out in their community.

The school’s librarian, Sharon Pretorius, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support, with donations totalling around 2 000 books so far. “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and care from the community and beyond, even as far as Johannesburg,” she said.
The Amanzimtoti Lions will also provide wooden planks to rebuild the library’s shelving. Beetge thanked the Lions, Durban Primary School, Manor Gardens Primary School, UKZN’s English Studies department and Glenwood Presbyterian Church for their support.
The Old Boys’ Association is still collecting books and encourages more schools, businesses and individuals to donate.
