Fellowship and fun for retirees in Amanzimtoti

AMANZIMTOTI has two monthly groups that individuals who are over the age of 50 and looking for fellowship and fun can join.

The Amanzimtoti Professional Retired Organisation of Business Executives (Probus) Club and South African Association of Retired Persons (Saarp) aim to bring retired and semi-retired individuals in the community together – especially those who may otherwise be lonely – to build friendships.

Cliff Hole, secretary of both organisations, said that despite minor differences, the groups work closely, sharing members and often going on outings together.

“Probus meets once a month on a Friday and Saarp on a Monday at the Amanzimtoti Bowling Club at 09:30 for 10:00, but members also arrange trips to various places, such as the Barnyard Theatre. Activities include meetings, entertainment, outings, [listening to] guest speakers and braais,” he said.

Probus is part of a worldwide organisation that connects retirees globally and provides various events and activities. The club was formed many years ago by retired Rotarians no longer in the service industry.

Saarp was established over 40 years ago to promote the interests of over-50s in South Africa. The organisation was formed to negotiate with various companies in order to provide competitive prices and excellent services at greatly reduced costs to members.

There are 18 branches across the country, including three in KZN.
