67 minutes and beyond: Help The Domino Foundation make a difference

The Domino Foundation strives to feed those in need through its nutrition programme all year round. The foundation offers various volunteer opportunities for those wanting to make a lasting difference in someone's life.

THE Domino Foundation’s Toti programme addresses year-round food insecurity, inspired by Mandela Day’s spirit of continuous community service.

The day, celebrated annually on July 18, inspires an outpouring of generosity and community spirit, commemorating Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

In Amanzimtoti, the foundation’s South Basin Nutrition programme embodies this spirit of ongoing service. It actively addresses food insecurity and provides essential nutrition to those in need.

Karen Brokensha, the foundation’s community builder, said that while the 67 minutes on Mandela Day are valuable, the needs of the community extend beyond a single day.

“The needs don’t disappear on July 19, only to reappear 364 days later. While we appreciate every minute spent in serving, every sandwich made, every rand donated, our heart is to see lives changed – the lives of our beneficiaries and the lives of the people who can give from their hearts, hands and pockets,” she said.

Brokensha added that partners and volunteers are crucial for the programme’s success, with many finding personal growth and enrichment through their contributions.

“There are 525 600 minutes in a year (an extra 1 440 in leap years) divided by the 67 minutes asked for on Mandela Day, which indicates a legacy should mean 7 844 engagements a year to live in consistent service to others,” she said.

For those in Toti looking to make a lasting difference, the Domino Foundation offers numerous volunteer opportunities.
