Sparrow Trust’s comfort packs support gender-based violence victims

The recent donation of 15 comfort packs brings the total to 60 bags. The comfort packs consist of essential toiletries and other items, such as goodies for babies, children and adults, and are designed to assist victims of gender-based violence.

WITH the help of generous donations, Sparrow Trust was able to deliver another 15 comfort packs for victims of crime this month, taking the total to 60 bags.

Fikile Shange, a Lifeline Social Worker who provides counselling and support to victims of crime at the Amanzimtoti Police Station’s gender-based violence (GBV) desk, was all smiles when she received the bags.

Estelle van Eeden, founding director of Sparrow Trust, a local counter-human trafficking organisation, said their comfort pack project was started to supplement the support services that the police officers, Lifeline and Uthingo Crisis Centre provide.

“Comfort packs are small acts of kindness and support for victims who seek help or counselling from the Amanzimtoti Police Station’s GBV desk and supporting non-profit organisations. They contain essential toiletries and other items, such as goodies for babies, children and adults, to assist a victim during the initial reporting process,” she said.

Van Eeden said they are truly grateful for every donation, and a special shout-out goes to the following for making the last delivery possible: Berean Chapel who sponsored the purchase of 15 drawstring bags and the contents of the first five baby bags; teenagers from Toti Methodist Church who contributed a variety of items; Aquarius Pharmacy, and individuals who prefer to remain anonymous for the generous donation of toiletries, colouring books and crayons.

“Every donation is an act of love, and together, we each make a positive contribution to increase victim-friendly services in our community,” added Van Eeden.
