Domino nutrition programme provides porridge to Toti crèches

With the help of two generous companies, underprivileged children in the South Coast area are now given warm bowls of porridge to start their school day.

THROUGH the generosity of two local companies, more than 1 000 South Coast preschoolers on The Domino Foundation’s nutrition programme are starting their day with warm bowls of porridge.

Domino’s communications officer, Rowan Phillips, said although John Harvey Kellogg’s slogan ‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ was not particularly catchy, his flaked cereals have become a staple meal in many homes today.

“Catchy it may not be, but Kellogg’s nutrition studies have shown how vital a healthy meal is to tackling a demanding day,” he said, adding that breakfast is a jumpstarter for people’s metabolisms after a long night without food.

Phillips said that going without breakfast means a mid-morning energy drain.

“Little learners who miss eating before heading to school can be restless and unfocused and have their academic impaired. So we are excited that the daily learning experience in 24 crèches in the KwaMakhutha, Umbumbulu and Illovu township areas now has a new foundation to build on. Through the funding provided by two very generous companies, AECI and FFS Refiners, 1 115 preschoolers are now tucking into warm bowls of fortified porridge,” he said.

The crèches are on The Domino Foundation’s nutrition programme which operates from Amanzimtoti kitchen at Kingsway Church International. A workshop to launch the provision of the porridge and to give crèche owners a solid understanding of how a nutritious breakfast, full of the key nutrients for healthy physical growth and cognitive development, was recently held at House-Kids Educare Centre in Ezimbokodweni.

Cheryl Dann, who heads up the nutrition team in the South Basin area, said, “The ladies running these crèches are determined to see their businesses flourish and are very serious about the health, well-being and education of the children in their care.”

She added that the money so generously donated towards hungry tummies only goes so far, so she encourages other corporates wanting to be part of changing lives to contact her at nutritionsouth@domino.org.za
