Air force veterans bid farewell to Amanzimtoti doctor

Known for his kind and professional manner, Dr Alex du Plessis, who assisted the SA Air Force Association for many years, is now retiring.

THE retirement of Dr Alex du Plessis of Intercare Amanzimtoti was received with great sadness by military veterans on the South Coast, especially the air force veterans and members of the SA Air Force Association (SAAFA).

Retired Colonel Steve Bekker, SAAFA country vice-president for KZN, said Dr du Plessis has had a very long association with the members of Air Force Base Durban (AFB Durban) and served as a part-time doctor (known then as a ‘session doctor’) in the 1990s to assist with the medical services there, while still running his own medical practice.

“As an aviation medicine practitioner, he conducted the annual ‘flying medicals’ for the air force flying crew members, and a close association has formed between the members and Dr du Plessis over the past 30 or more years,” he said.

Bekker, also a former base commander of AFB Durban, said he treated the military veterans with great kindness and with the utmost professionalism over many years and has also formed a close relationship with the various veteran organisations, including the SAAFA.

“This has been fuelled by the fact that he is a qualified private pilot himself and has owned a number of aircraft in the past, including an ex-air-force Kudu aircraft,” he said.

Bekker, on behalf of his wife, Linda, and all military veterans, including the members of the SAAFA, wished him and his wife, Trish, all the best on their well-deserved retirement.

“You have left an indelible impression on us, and for those of us who know you personally, we will cherish your friendship in the future,” he said.
