Update on weekend domestic refuse collection, garden refuse sites

Domestic refuse will be collected in residential areas by DSW over the weekend to clear accumulated waste.

WARD 97 councillor, André Beetge, provides an update on the weekend’s domestic refuse collection and the opening of garden refuse sites in the greater Amanzimtoti area.

Domestic refuse collection in accordance with the normal Friday collections schedule is presently being undertaken (March 15).

“Due to the fact that the department is also attempting to clear the accumulated waste along the sidewalks, this is taking longer than normal and compactors are getting filled quicker and have to be emptied at the landfill site more often,” said Beetge.

Therefore, compactors will be collecting on Saturday in line with areas normally collected on a Monday. “If your refuse is normally collected on a Monday, set your bags out on Saturday, March 16,” said Beetge.

On Sunday (March 17) compactors will be collecting in line with the Tuesday schedule.

Beetge said collections in line with the normal weekly collection schedule will resume from Monday.

He also reminds the community that garden refuse sites are not open or receiving any deliveries yet.

“Please keep garden refuse, building materials, furniture, bottles, cardboard, metal and plastic until such time as they open again. Alternatively, dispose at the Illovo landfill site that is actually open. Please don’t dump on the verge, the circus site or merely somewhere along the roadside. We are almost through this, let’s not give strikers the satisfaction of rendering our suburb a rubbish dump,” said Beetge.
