START Rescue embarks on life-saving mission

START Rescue aims to teach 10 000 people the life-saving skill of CPR.

START Rescue held a free CPR course at Hutchison Park, on February 10, as part of its 2024 vision to teach 10 000 or more members of the community the life-saving skill.

Konrad Jones, founding member and director of START Rescue and rescue manager for Netcare911, said 113 people registered for the CPR in the Park event, with 78 in attendance on the day.

“Given the importance of CPR, we would also prefer to offer this type of training to schools, in smaller groups,” he said.

As a member of an emergency service, Jones knows very well the importance of life-saving skills.

START Rescue’s first responders, Barbara McNamara, Bevan van Vuuran and Jackie Singh, teach the community about CPR.

“We demonstrated the importance of CPR, the safety of the person, how to protect oneself when faced with the task of performing CPR, as well as hand placements and ratios. We focused on the legal aspects when being a Good Samaritan, the importance of calling for help on 082 911 or 031 941 4070 as well as the use in most public environments of an automated external defibrillator,” he said.

To help the non-profit organisation achieve their vision of teaching 10 000 or more members of the community the life-saving skill of CPR, they have partnered with paramedics from Netcare911 and nursing sisters from Kingsway Hospital.
