Road-repair projects continue in Isipingo

Also, the need for the repair of the pedestrian bridge over the M35 near Orient Primary School has been escalated to the South African National Roads Agency.

WARD 90 councillor Shad Nowbuth has said the safety and well-being of all road users, together with the protection against damage to motor vehicles, is of paramount importance, which is why road repairs continue in Isipingo.

On December 14, Nowbuth held an on-site meeting with an official from the Department of Transport at sections of the badly damaged M35, also known as Mfundi Mngadi Drive.

“The Department of Transport was approached to rehabilitate sections of the road between the Platt Drive traffic lights and the Kynoch Road Junction, with special regard to the badly damaged stretch adjacent to the former Isipingo transit camp,” said Nowbuth.

The M35 next to the old transit camp saw protests at a rate of at least two per month with tyres being burnt, damaging the tar and causing potholes over the years.

“It was agreed that these sections needed urgent repairs, but a final response is awaited from the department,” he said.

An assessment of the poor state of the pedestrian bridge over the M35 near Orient Primary School was also done. Nowbuth said the issue will be escalated to the South African National Roads Agency for attention. The eThekwini Municipality pothole-repair unit has also continued doing its rounds, repairing various spots in Isipingo Hill’s Sykes Road and adjacent roads. Nowbuth said the unit was requested to repair the badly potholed and extremely busy northbound Wilcox Road between the Platt Drive traffic lights and Jeffels Road Junction.
