Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation transforms lives

The Amanzimtoti branch currently assists individuals and families in the Winklespruit and Felekisi areas.

THE Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation‘s mission revolves around empowering and uplifting marginalised individuals and families in South Africa.

The Amanzimtoti branch, led by Elzett Thiart, predominantly operates across the Winklespruit and Felekisi area.

“The founder, Hanna Grobler, always helped people in any way she could. This then led her to establish the non-profit organisation (NPO) in 2008. There are 12 branches in the country, with the head office in Pretoria. We provide personal attention and direct benefits to children, youth, the elderly and their families to restore dignity, help them reach their potential and participate fully in society. What distinguishes us from traditional charities, is that we focus on empowerment,” said Thiart.

Handing out food and clothing is how they enter communities and see which families are in desperate need of assistance. They also have a charity container next door to Fountain Medical Centre in Winklespruit, which is open to those who are in need of clothing, household and sanitary items.

Thiart said, “We work on a donation basis; whatever we get given, we give out. The biggest thing we need, and the most scarce item, is food. You might think it’s just one tin of beans, but for someone else it’s able to feed a family.”

There are many programmes the NPO runs, however, with limited volunteers in the Amanzimtoti area, they are only able to run a few. One of them is the womanhood programme which equips women from disadvantaged backgrounds with income-generating skills such as making arts, crafts, and detergents.

With help from a Ballito-based business, they are now in the process of turning a house in Felekisi into a free community crèche. “We are so excited about this project. Parents can now go look for a job, knowing their children will be looked after,” she said.

The foundation has witnessed a number of success stories, with families finding employment and improving their lives through their support.

Thiart said, “I have a passion for helping others. Journeying with a person and seeing their lives and minds transform, makes it all worthwhile.”
