Isipingo shops raided for expired stock

The public is urged to report the non-compliance of any tuckshops or food outlets to law enforcement officers.

PUBLIC health practitioners from eThekwini Municipality and law enforcement officers were out in full force in Isipingo on December 2, visiting various businesses to check for compliance with food-handling standards.

City head of Health Rose van Heerden said a team comprised of metro police, the Department of Labour, the Department of City Health and the SAPS is on a campaign to ensure that businesses comply with the City’s food-handling by-laws. The team also warned shop owners about selling expired food and banned skin-lightning creams.

“We are looking at food safety and hygiene standards as well as compliance with our by-laws. Our environmental health practitioners visit various establishments from time to time to check for compliance with food safety regulations. They also educate the food handlers about the standards that they have to comply with,” said Van Heerden.

She asked the public to play their part when visiting food-handling establishments and tuckshops by reporting any non-compliance to proper standards that they witness.

“Some of these establishments open shops in spaces that were not designed for that purpose. Some sleep in those businesses, and some do not have adequate pest control measures,” she said.

To report non-compliance, the public can call the eThekwini’s Health Unit on 031 311 3555.
