Edu-Paw hosts graduation ceremony

During the course of the eight-week programme, the children were taught the responsibility of owning a dog.

TO celebrate the culmination of their eight-week canine care programme, a graduation ceremony was held for Edu-Paw’s Class 12 at the Amanzimtoti SPCA, recently.

The volunteers at Edu-Paw proudly handed certificates and hampers to the 10 children and their dogs at the ceremony. During the course of the programme, they were taught the responsibility of owning a dog.

Edu-Paw’s Cathy Keegan said they were grateful for their supporters who generously donated towards the day and supplied food dishes, tinned food, biscuits, treats, tug toys, brushes and tennis balls for the dogs.

“Each child was presented with a certificate of completion of the programme. This is always a very proud moment where their commitment is recognised. They also received a framed photo of them with their dog as well as a laminated poster of the 5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare to display in their homes for all to see. They received a copy of a pledge which they all read out together, making promises to be good dog owners. After the graduation ceremony, the children enjoyed cooldrink, hotdogs and graduation cake,” she said.

The children also shared the highlights of the programme, which included two mornings spent with Irene Moussouris and Robyn Dunbar, doing basic obedience and agility training, and with Sithembiso Blessing Majoka from The Birding Life, who shared his passion for nature and birdlife as well as a visit from a member of Snare Aware.

Class 13 is set to commence in January next year. “We are in need of dog/puppy pellets, collars and leads as well as finances to pay for sterilisation of the class dogs. Our office container and storage container are both old, leaking and rusting rapidly. If there is a handyman who would be willing to help us to repair, refurbish and paint, we’d be so grateful,” added Keegan.
