Teams tackle plastic pollution after heavy rainfall

Clean Surf Project, along with community members and schools and businesses, continue to keep the beaches litter-free.

WITH beaches scattered with litter after the recent heavy rainfall, Clean Surf Project (CSP) and the community have been hard at work cleaning up.

A joint effort by CSP, Laerskool Fleur and Outdoor Environmental Education Africa saw teams tackling Karridene Beach on October 23. CSP’s Romy Wenzel said, “Ninety-eight learners assisted with the collection of 17 bags, one tyre, one fridge door and one broken toy bike along the Msimbazi Rivermouth.”

On October 21, Umkomaas Primary School joined members on their clean sweep at Boardwalk, Illovo Beach. Wenzel said, “Fifty-six bags, several bulk pieces of polystyrene and two tyres were removed. We applaud all participants for their great team spirit and passion for our treasured coastline, the ocean and, in particular, marine life. Thanks to eThekwini Beach Cleansing for the prompt removal.”

Then, on October 17 to 20, a team of five CSP members removed a total of 182 bags of litter at the Amanzimtoti Lagoon/Beach, Chain Rocks heading to Doonside, and Baggies Beach.

She said that being a non-profit organisation, any support and/or contribution will be appreciated to continue to engage in daily clean-up operations, with the focus being on remote beach areas.
