THE first leg of this year’s Lions International Peace Poster contest was concluded on October 23, and the judges were amazed by the high standard of the learners’ art.

The competition has been running annually across the globe for over 30 years and is open to learners aged between 11 and 13. Locally, it is organised by the Lion’s Club of Kingsburgh. Speaking on behalf of the Lions, Esmé Nel said this year’s theme was ‘Dare to dream’.

“The contest is open to all local schools and when the window for entries opens, learners can submit the posters they designed and made themselves. The art was of a great standard, and the Upper South Coast Art Association helped with the judging process,” said Esmé.

Athlone Park Primary School’s Reese Govender won first place with her bright poster that depicted outer space and ocean themes.

“My poster tells the story of how my ancestors are going towards the future. I drew a staircase representing the journey to the future. My dream is to become an astronaut when I grow up, and in my poster, I included my love for space and the ocean. I’m really proud of myself because I tried my best with the poster,” said Reese.

She won herself R600 cash, as well as the same amount for her school.

Amanzimtoti Primary School’s Okuhle Malapane’s poster was chosen for second place, winning herself R400 in cash, as well as another R400 for her school. She said she had fun creating her poster.

Erin Govender of Athlone Park Primary won R200 for herself as well as the same amount for her school for having the highly commended poster. She said her poster was inspired by her love for fantasy books.

Amanzimtoti Primary School’s principal, Tracey Voster, said she was proud of the final choice made by the judges and extended thanks to the Lions Club. She also thanked her school’s art teacher, Amy Griesel.

Athlone Park Primary School’s principal, John Voster, also thanked the Lions as well as his school’s art teacher, Sarah van der Westhuisen.

Reese’s poster moves on to be judged at district level, and if she wins, she will win an all-expenses paid trip to the United States next year where her poster will compete with winners from other countries.
