Community makes Winkle Beach great again

The area around Winklespruit Beach has been in a state of decline over the past few years.

SCORES of people heeded the call made by Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti and Abantu of Amanzimtoti to come together and spruce up the area around Winklespruit Beach on October 21 before the holiday season begins.

Abantu of Amanzimtoti is a group made up of residents and different organisations who share a common goal of wanting to transform Ward 97 back to its former glory. The volunteers cut the grass and repainted the parking-lot kerb markings. The wooden fence around the lifesavers’ building, which had partially collapsed, was also repaired.

Michelle Dunnett of Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti said she was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who turned up and volunteered their time and other resources. She thanked the Kingsburgh Lions Club members who came out in their numbers, as well as Afriforum which donated R40 000 and other resources towards the clean-up.

Chairperson of the Amanzimtoti chapter of Afriforum, Jannie van Staden, said the organisation has been working together with other like-minded teams to make Winklespruit Beach beautiful again.

“There are many people who want to come back to Winklespruit and use the beach like they used to before. We are now bringing it back to a state where people can use it again. We know that if we don’t step up and do things ourselves, things won’t get fixed, which is why we decided we are going to adopt this beach and take ownership of it, and then we can work from there,” said Van Staden.
