Amanzimtoti learners make sandwiches for those in need

Kids Academy Africa turned its classrooms into kitchens in order to assist The Domino Foundation’s Nutrition Programme which feeds 800 children a day.

LEARNERS at Kids Academy Africa had fun preparing their donation of peanut butter sandwiches for Amanzimtoti crèches on The Domino Foundation’s nutrition programme.

The foundation’s communication officer, Rowan Phillips, said preparing food can be fun, so why not have some of that fun while at school.

“The Grade Six and Sevens turned their classrooms into kitchens to have some fun while they worked together as a team and learned about safety, hygiene and responsibility while they made sandwiches,” he said.

The school’s Grade Seven teacher, Thembisile Sibiya, said they heard about the needs of The Domino Foundation’s Nutrition Programme in Toti, and how volunteers feed vulnerable children at early childhood development centres and primary and high schools. “Kids Academy decided to be part of the answer by making peanut butter sandwiches for the programme,” said Sibiya.

Grade Six and Seven sandwich-makers at Kids Academy Africa had fun preparing their donation to preschoolers in Toti crèches on The Domino Foundation’s Nutrition programme.

After washing hands and donning disposable gloves, the learners started buttering, spreading, cutting and packing. Head of the Nutrition Programme’s operations in the South Basin, Cheryl Dann, described how there was such a sense of fun that morning and how the learners were so excited knowing their efforts would be helping other children.

“When the ‘kitchen’ tables had been cleared and the last crumbs swept away, the school then donated a 20l bucket of peanut butter to help the programme meet the nutritional needs of the 800 school children it feeds every day,” she said.
