Amanzimtoti cricketers conquer home game despite rain

Despite delays due to the rain, the first team won the first match of the day. The second was abandoned in the 11th over.

THE second weekend of the KZN Castle T20 Premier League was played recently at Amanzimtoti Cricket Club (ACC) and also away – in cool, overcast conditions.

In the morning game, ACC’s first team hosted African Warriors Cricket Club’s first team at the Toti Oval. The local team would then travel to Northwood in the afternoon to take on a strong Crusaders Cricket Club first team.

Light drizzle delayed the start of the first match which was initially reduced to 19 overs a side. African Warriors won the toss and elected to bowl first. The club’s scribe, Peter Lonie, said what followed was a batting masterclass from ACC’s opening batsman and Protea Sarel Erwee.

“Erwee’s unbeaten 86 powered the local side to 144/5 in 19 overs. He was ably supported by Dale Kinsey and a late run-a-ball innings from Luc Jacobs. Erwee’s innings were high-class entertainment for the club’s supporters and the many juniors who gathered,” he said.

A further rain delay resulted in the African Warriors requiring 114 runs to win in 15 overs. “The visitors got off to a good start, keeping up with the required run rate through the power play before Luc Jacobs and JJ Fourie struck for the local side. A wicket a piece for Gareth Lonie, Tegan Naidoo and Erwee kept the African Warriors below the required run rate before a wicket in the last over for Fourie sealed the match for ACC. Toti won by 7 runs on the Duckworth Lewis method,” said Lonie.

In the second game of the day, Crusaders won the toss and elected to bat first in a match reduced to 18 overs a side because of the morning delays. Crusaders got off to a flyer despite Jacobs dismissing Marques Ackerman early. The hosts were 120/2 when the rain again intervened in the 11th over. Once the rain set in, the umpires called the game and the match was abandoned.
