The school was founded in Adams Mission in 1853 by Rev David Rood, a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Some of its alumni include Mangosuthu Buthelezi; Sir Seretse Khama, the former president of Botswana; Milton Obote, the former president of Uganda; Joshua Nkomo, the former vice-president of Zimbabwe; former president Thabo Mbeki’s mother; Epainette Mbeki; Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma; former chief justice Pius Langa, and chief Albert Luthuli.

Kaunda said Adams College prides itself on producing well-rounded young people and good matric results.

“A centre of educational excellence, this institution is known for producing prominent leaders of our society, thus contributing to the goal of building a better life for all,” said Kaunda.

The school’s principal, Musa Zulu, said since the institution has a history of producing some of the most respected leaders, not only in South Africa but throughout the whole continent, it becomes important to maintain that history by keeping the school in a good condition.

“There is a project afoot to redevelop our hostels because we are a boarding school. We are an old institution, but our learners must be able to live and learn in modern conditions. There will also be a renewed focus on extra-curricular activities including sports and debating,” said Zulu.

He added that the school is also working with other schools in the area by helping them improve their results.
