Toti Theatre Festival embraces artists

The three-day festival is just one of many that supports and develops the artistic community.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Art and Culture (KZNDSAC) held a three-day Toti Theatre Festival at Kuswag Skool to support and develop artists as well as entertain.

The department’s Chris Randlehoff, who was the project manager, said they support and develop the artistic community through events and cultural activities, which in turn creates job opportunities. The Toti Teaterfees (theatre festival) is just one of many activities to support the artists.

“Available participants of the provincial ATKV Tienertoneel, a festival that has been run countrywide over the last 59 years, were approached and asked to perform in Amanzimtoti. This is after the competition took place last month at the Playhouse in Durban. Kuswag Skool was chosen because of their continuous participation over the past few years, their achievements and their willingness to use the school hall as a theatre,” he said.

Some of the show-stoppers included a book reading by well-known radio personality Eben Cruywagen, a one-hander show, Vier 40, by Magdel Brand, as well as King of Broken Things featuring writer and producer Michael Taylor-Broderick, along with Cara Roberts and Bryan Hiles.

“The professional shows were outstanding, with King of Broken Things being an English show to make the evening more inclusive,” added Randlehoff.

He thanked the department for the initiative and support to make the festival happen, as well as Magdel Brand, ATKV Durban and Kuswag Skool.
