Water leak damages road in Illovo Glen

The municipality has been working to find the sources of the leaks that are causing potholes on San Gabriel Avenue.

SAN Gabriel Avenue in Illovo Glen has been a point of concern for residents for several months as there has been a recurring water seepage on the road, leading to potholes developing.

After noting the problem, Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said that with San Gabriel Avenue being the lowest point of the dune, whatever underground leak occurs above it, will find its way to the lowest point.

“The higher area above is built-residential which comes with various access challenges to trace and attend to such leaks. This is not an isolated case as it often manifests across the area, given the coastal topography,” said Beetge.

Following several reports, eThekwini Municipality technicians eventually detected and repaired a leak along San Thome Place which is located above San Gabriel Avenue.

“Following such a repair being done, there is a period during which the water trapped in the soil above actually has to drain to determine whether it was the only underground leak contributing to the problem. Such a period of draining would also be affected by weather patterns, such as cooler, overcast or rainy conditions, which could delay the drainage process,” he said.

Given that renewed seepage was noted during the past weekend, he said it would appear there could be further underground leaks from within residential premises located above San Gabriel Avenue.

“While the municipality is hoping to trace these leaks as soon as possible, residents who note wet areas, areas with notable green-grass patches or unknown water flow, are requested to alert us accordingly as it could assist in identifying such leaks,” said Beetge.
