Grandmother drowns while on holiday in Amanzimtoti

Lifeguards at Amanzimtoti Main Beach brought her to shore and administered CPR, however, she was declared deceased an hour later.

A GRANDMOTHER, who managed to rescue her grandchild before being dragged in by a current, died earlier today, September 25.

Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, said family members who were on vacation from Pietermaritzburg, and residing at a holiday apartment along Beach Road in Amanzimtoti, took to the beach south of Inyoni Rocks.

A stretch of beach, he said, is clearly marked as a non-bathing area.

“A grandmother and grandchild were sitting on the beach close to the surf when a wave broke and swept them in. The grandmother managed to hand the child to the father, after which she herself, was dragged in by the current,” said Beetge.

He said lifeguards at the adjacent Amanzimtoti Main Beach were alerted by car guards.

“Lifeguards managed to get her to shore where CPR was administered, but unfortunately, she was declared deceased an hour later,” said Beetge.

He extended his condolences to the family on their loss and a word of appreciation to everyone who tried to assist or resuscitate her.

“Another example of just how quickly an innocent visit to an unprotected beach can turn into tragedy,” Beetge added.
