“Learners were commended for their excellent writing and presentation skills by Umlazi District English Home Language Subject Advisor, Clive Mottian. Schools were also acknowledged for their initiatives in starting reading clubs at their respective schools and getting learners on board with reading,” she said.

The guest speaker at the event was Rubendra Govender, former teacher, author and executive producer of the movie Sugar Cane Boy which will be released nationally and internationally in cinemas later this year. Govender, in his interactive presentation, informed and inspired the very eager teachers and learners.

Singh expressed that reading and nurturing a culture of reading is a collective responsibility. “We need to work together to empower our learners by encouraging them to read,” she said.

Singh went on to explain the importance of schools networking and using various platforms to nurture a culture of reading and stimulating interest in reading among learners. “Together we can make a difference in literacy levels,” she said.

Singh also quoted Malala Yousafzai, who said, ‘One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.’
