CLEAN Surf Project, with support from Westville Boys’ High School, kicked off National Clean-Up and Recycle Week at Pipeline Beach on September 11.
Members of Clean Surf Project and the school’s Grade 10 learners embarked on a clean sweep at Pipeline Beach, the dunes and the parking area.

The non-profit organisation’s Romy Wenzel said, “Glass, glass and more glass bottles were buried inside the bushes and dune vegetation, amid plenty of plastic products that just don’t belong here. A round of applause to all the young gentlemen who participated, collecting 33 bags of mixed waste material as well as 37 bags of glass bottles which will be collected by Manaza Recycling,” she said.
Learners also spent a total of three days last week assisting Clean Surf Project where extra helping hands were needed.
Wenzel said, “We are extremely proud to have the privilege to spend time with the group as well as for them allowing us to provide general knowledge about appropriate waste disposal, environmental protection, recycling opportunities and dune rehabilitation.”
The school’s team leader, Ryan Liberty, said the school participates in community outreach programmes every year. “Given everything that has happened in the past few months, we think our beaches need a little extra tender, loving care. The beach clean-up, partnering with Clean Surf Project, is one of 12 organisations the school partners with each year,” said Liberty.
