International Coastal Clean-Up Day observed at southern beaches

The day is commemorated internationally to promote the good health of the coastline.

THE International Coastal Clean-Up Day was held on the beaches south of Durban on Saturday, September 16. eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said a total of 220 refuse bags were collected at Isipingo Beach, Dakota Beach and Treasure Beach.

The clean-up was held by the City’s Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit which partnered with a number of partners, including John Dory’s Zero Waste, Kamalinee Primary School, Khula Aquelle, the KZN Sharks Board, the Department of Economic Development, South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, Association of Clean Communities and Amazulu FC.

“The main objective of the clean-up was to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the beaches clean. This is important as waste washed into rivers and the ocean has a negative impact on marine species. To avoid this, residents and visitors are requested to avoid illegal dumping and littering and to adhere to waste-collection scheduled days in their areas,” said Sisilana.

She added that keeping the environment clean is a collective responsibility.
