Athlone Park Primary teacher retires after 42 years

The school bids farewell to Susan Gace who heads into retirement after 42 years at the school, and 43 years of service to education.

AFTER 43 years of dedicated service to education, Susan Gace retired from her position as teacher at Athlone Park Primary School, at the end of August.

Her teaching career began at Dundee Boarding School after she qualified in 1979. She acted as house mother and taught Grade Five. A transfer to Athlone Park Primary School a year later allowed her to move closer to her home.

Susan is the only daughter of the late Langley Keith Gace and Sheena Ann Gace. She was raised in Montclair with two younger brothers, Peter and Derrick. She is very close to her nieces and nephews, Langley, Joann, Nicole, Wesley and Andrew.

The school’s principal, John Vorster, said she has taught all subjects from Grade 3 to 7 during her career. “Her talents lie in the teaching of mathematics and English. She contributed greatly to music in our school and ran our school library for many years. Our school has lost an exceptionally dedicated teacher, and we know that the impact she has made during her years of service will be very difficult to match,” he said.

Vorster, on behalf of the KZN Department of Education, the school governing body, the staff, the children and their parents, thanked Gace for her outstanding work ethic, professional manner in dealing with thousands of children and their parents, her respect for colleagues and those in authority, her unconditional love for all human beings, her kindness and genuine interest in others, her ability to adapt to all the changes in education during the past 40 plus years, her punctuality, reliability, trustworthiness and so much more.

“Gace is by far the best math teacher that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She is an Athlone Park Primary School legend who now officially holds the record as the longest-standing member of staff at our school: 42 years and eight months. Enjoy every moment of your well-deserved retirement. May God bless you abundantly and grant you good health, peace and happiness in the years that lie ahead,” he said.
