Sewage causes Amanzimtoti beach closures

The closure comes after the mayor promised that all beaches will be operational during the festive season.

HEAVY sewage outflow from the Ezimbokodweni River near the golf course has resulted in the beaches around Amanzimtoti being closed off for bathing as a result of contamination.

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said Pipeline, Amanzimtoti Main, Warnerdoone and Winklespruit beaches were closed with immediate effect on Wednesday, September 13.

“This was as a result of a current and a north-easterly wind pushing outfall from the Ezimbokodweni River next to the golf course inshore and in a southern direction, as far as Warner Beach and possibly beyond,” said Beetge.

Karridene and Umgababa beaches were also closed on September 9 at the instruction of the KZN Sharks Board as a result of shark activity caused by a stranded whale carcass near Karridene.

The closure happened after eThekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda visited Ward 97 on September 11, promising that the City is working to ensure that all beaches are open by the time the festive season starts.

More updates will be given when the beaches are safe to be used by the public again.
