Further delays to Lotus Park water supply

Tests will be done at the reservoir to ensure the water is safe.

THE repairs to the water pipeline that had deprived residents in Lotus Park of water for over three weeks have finally been completed, but residents have to wait a few more days for water. This was announced by Ward 90 councillor Shad Nowbuth on Wednesday, September 13.

The pipe had raptured on August 20 at the nearby Malukazi Informal Settlement after people built homes on top of it. Delays to a timeous repair were caused when the informal settlement residents threatened and prevented eThekwini Municipality’s technician from working on it, demanding that formal houses be built for them first.

As the water started to flow from taps again, residents noted that it looked murky and could be unsafe for drinking. Nowbuth said the water and sanitation department was notified, and a decision was made to shut the supply off and flush the line.

“This may cause inconvenience and a delay in water supply, but it is being done in the best interest of the residents and to ensure that their health is not compromised,” said Nowbuth.

On the morning of Thursday, September 14, a team from the water department started flushing the Pelican Drive reservoir and tower to remove any impurities that may be present.

“Arrangements are being made to have the water quality tested before releasing to consumers,” he said.

While that work continues, water trucks will continue supplying residents with water.
