Domino Foundation’s volunteer steps up to the plate

Tim Dann helps run the Domino kitchen in Amanzimtoti, making and delivering peanut butter sandwiches and relief hampers to those in need.

TIM Dann, a volunteer for The Domino Foundation’s nutrition programme, is always eager to help out and deliver daily peanut butter sandwiches to schools.

The Domino Foundation’s communications officer, Rowan Phillips, said Tim’s arrival at the early childhood development (ECD) centres on the nutrition programme is always greeted with shouts of delight by the preschoolers waiting for their daily sandwiches.

“It’s not just that they know their hungry tummies are about to be satisfied, but Tim has a special place in the children’s hearts,” he said.

His mother, Cheryl Dann, who heads up the Toti nutrition team, said he has a deep feeling for the vulnerable, and working in the non-profit space has inspired him to help the community. The young man is a volunteer at the Domino kitchens, daily helping make the sandwiches, packing and loading them, and doing the paperwork for the relief hampers which go to families in need.

Rowan said, “He doesn’t have a driver’s licence yet, but always eagerly leaps into the delivery vehicle to accompany the driver on his rounds to primary and high schools and several ECD centres around Amanzimtoti.”

Having left school and unable to find suitable work, Tim readily put up his hand to put in time with whatever needs to be done in Domino’s hive of activity at Kingsway Church International.

“The programme, in the last year, sent out 61 500 sandwiches, 78 000 servings of porridge and 522 relief hampers. When kitchen coordinator Purity Ngcongo went on maternity leave, Tim stepped up to the challenge of taking on the running of the kitchen,” said Rowan.

When asked what he loves most about what he does, Tim was adamant that the children’s appreciation of what the programme calls ‘food for thought’ is very important to him. However, he admits that there is nothing more heartwarming than the learners’ joy when they see him.
