PHOTOS: Isipingo SAPS welcomes junior commissioners

The selected learners are ambassadors for the youth and interact within school awareness campaigns and crime-prevention initiatives.

IN an effort to strengthen partnerships in schools, Isipingo SAPS and the Department of Education have launched a junior commissioner project.

Communications officer of SAPS Isipingo, Warrant Officer Pam Kisten, said learners from secondary schools in the area were nominated, with the election being based on learners’ research skills, knowledge on given topics and presentations given.

“The six learners are now ambassadors for the youth and the SAPS youth component interacting within the school awareness campaigns and crime-prevention initiatives,” she said.

The contestants will also go on to compete at provincial level for the provincial junior commissioner ranks. “They will gain exposure to various work environments and training opportunities,” said Kisten.

At the official function held in the police station’s boardroom recently, the junior commissioners were welcomed by the station commander of SAPS Isipingo and relevant component heads. Those present at the launch of the programme included Isipingo Community Police Forum’s head Junaid Iqbal, CPF Women’s Forum chairperson Melisha Gounder, spiritual leader Pastor Njabulo Malinga and other non-governmental organisations.

Kisten said that Lieutenant Colonel Eric Jacobs commended each participant on their professional mannerisms and the research and dedication shown towards the project. “The learners were given respective badges, and there will be ongoing interaction between SAPS and the Department of Education to strengthen the partnership in schools,” she said.

Junior commissioner station commander Isipingo, Khadija Thayab, a Grade 10 learner at Isipingo Secondary School was recently in a district competition with 42 other stations, with four positions available. Kisten said she was awarded district junior commissioner support. She now holds both ranks.

The other elected junior commissioners: detective commander is Refiloe Zindela (Grade 8) and visible policing commander is Sivani Pillay (Grade 9) from Isipingo Secondary School; administrative commander is Ariyan Krishna (Grade 8), station co-ordinator is Nakoshia Pillay (Grade 8) and peace ambassador is Siphokazi Cele (Grade 9) from Strelitzia Secondary School.
