RESIDENTIA Mooi Hawens is planning to start a support group for carers and family members who are caring for loved ones living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
The monthly meeting, starting on September 20, will be led by social worker Mariza Kitching through Residentia Mooi Hawens and the Association for Dementia and Alzheimer’s of South Africa.

Kitching described Alzheimer’s disease as a brain disorder that affects memory, thinking and behaviour.
“The benefits of participating in a support group are that through group discussion and support, you gain insight and share ideas and experience so that you feel less lonely, isolated, or judged. Group interaction and support could also improve your knowledge of resources, treatment options and coping skills in dealing with your loved one living with dementia,” she said.
The support group will meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 10:00 at Residentia Mooi Hawens, 3 Middleton Road, Winklespruit.
