Help rescue Amanzimtoti SPCA from financial turmoil

For the last 30 years, the SPCA has been a beacon of hope for countless vulnerable animals.

WITH last year’s loss of over R317 000, the Amanzimtoti SPCA is urgently appealing to the community to help rescue the organisation from financial turmoil.

The SPCA’s manager, Tracey Girling, said, “Our SPCA, which has been a beacon of hope for countless vulnerable animals, is facing an unprecedented financial crisis. Despite our best efforts, last year’s loss of R317 196 has drained our reserves, leaving us unable to meet the expenses of the upcoming month.”

She said they believe that every animal, no matter how big or small, deserves a life free from pain, hunger and distress.

“For more than 30 years, our doors have remained open, ready to accept any animal into our care. We never turn away an animal in need. Our mission extends far beyond providing shelter and food to homeless animals; it is about preventing cruelty through education and ensuring animals are protected in accordance with the Animal Protections Act,” said Girling.

For many animals, the SPCA is the only thing standing between them and a life of suffering.

Girling said, “However, the challenging times we face threaten to jeopardise everything we’ve built. While we were anticipating some relief from the municipal grant, we are unfortunately still awaiting the payout. This payout is also set to be significantly less than in previous years.”

Additionally, its recent challenges, such as the theft of its van, the ongoing repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic and devastating flooding, have all taken a toll on its financial stability. “Every month, our expenses exceed our income, and we have now reached the point where there simply isn’t enough money left in the bank to cover our expenses for next month,” said Girling.

She said they are committed to being a voice for the voiceless but need the community’s support.

“Any contribution will make a difference. We understand that times are tough for many, but we believe the kindness and generosity of the human spirit can overcome any obstacle. Help us to continue the vital work we do as animals cannot speak for themselves. They rely on us, and we can’t let them down,” pleaded Girling.
