FOUR amateur athletes from Combat Coaching gave it their all at the MFC 124 (mega fighting championships) at the Greyville Convention Centre recently.
The MFC is an adults only event aimed at showcasing the vast pool of talent in the MMA (mixed martial arts) industry in South Africa.

The fighters’ coach, Morné Swanepoel said, “It’s the closest thing to EFC (extreme fighting championship), so I usually require my athletes to become champions before I look at moving them to the pro ranks in EFC.”
Swanepoel said the event follows the same fight-card layout as the EFC, except it has different rules, and athletes wear slighter bigger gloves and shin guards. He said the athletes did exceptionally well at the tournament, despite facing more experienced opponents.
Nkalipho Hlongwane lost a three-round fight in the flyweight division, due to the judges’ decision. Njabulo Mfayela lost a three-round fight in the featherweight division. Cam Maulu won in the third round via knockout in the welterweight division, while Lourens Roodt won in the second round via technical knockout in the middleweight division. He also received ‘fight of the night’.

Swanepoel said, “All four fights were intense, high-level amateur fights. It was also rewarding for my team to be the one to receive fight of the night.”
His son and professional fighter, Bradley Swanepoel, will be going up against Zimbabwe’s Robert Simbowe at EFC today, August 10.
