LION André Beetge was inducted as the 56th president of the Amanzimtoti Lions Club during a function held at the Island Hotel, recently.
In his address, Beetge called for a united and coordinated approach by non-government/ non-profit organisations that serve the larger Amanzimtoti community, in an attempt to eradicate double-dipping and extend the reach of support.

“During a recent meeting with some stakeholders, we already agreed that ours is an extremely involved and giving community that is often exploited by opportunist. With the ever increasing needs, against a backdrop of drastic escalation in the cost of living and increased unemployment, further dictated by unrealistic political decisions, the responsibility is ours to ensure that our community is protected in the better interest of those who need it most,” he said.
Beetge added that it rests upon organisations such as the Lions, that enjoy an international footprint based upon credibility and integrity, to take the lead in ensuring that this happens to the benefit of both those who are prepared to give, and those who are about to receive.
While keeping to the Lions Club International’s five pillars of service; vision, hunger, diabetes, cancer and environment, he indicated a specific emphasis on Jona Vaughan Home for the Handicapped and outreach towards children in the forthcoming year.

During the ceremony, the Lions also welcomed Madelyn and Frikkie Stander, Barry and Christa Human and Shandra Vermaak as new members.
“We are extremely excited about these new members who bring with them a diverse skill set that ranges from digital marketing to the hospitality industry and everything in between, let alone a burst of youthful enthusiasm,” said Beetge.
The board of directors were announced with past president, Lion Natalie Angelo, taking on the responsibilities of secretary, Lion Wayne Parker responsible for membership, Lion Dennii Dorning heading projects, Lion Margaret Haus returning as treasurer and Lion Kryn Haus stepping into the fundraising portfolio.
“While we anticipate an extremely busy year ahead as we also have to save a country, one has to make time to pay back and reach out to the less fortunate, so expect us to come knocking,” said Beetge in closing.
