PHOTOS: Lower Illovo Neighbourhood Watch hosts clean-up

Committee members and residents put in the work to ensure their area is kept neat, clean and safe.

THE Lower Illovo Neighbourhood Watch recently held its first monthly ‘Let’s Clean up Illovo’ community project, to remove litter, gravel and unsightly clutter.

The clean-up consisted of nine executive committee members and about 25 community members.

Public relations officer Austin Gounden said that despite the poor turnout, they had an amazing day spending time with everyone. “We wish more people could have pitched up because it would have certainly made a huge difference,” he said.

The group started the clean-up near Illovo Primary School, where they cleared the street of litter. They made their way to the main road, removing sand from the road and cutting overgrown bush to ensure motorists have clear visibility when travelling up and down the hill.

Gounden said, “It’s extremely important to keep our community clean, especially along the main road. Clearing the bushes not only helps avoid car accidents but also takes away potential hiding spots for criminals. It also makes the area look neat and presentable.”

The committee extended thanks to all those who cleaned, contributed and donated toward the clean-up.

“Thank you to those who put in the manual labour and those who contributed cold drinks, lunch, bin bags, gloves and money toward machinery and fuel. We would also like to thank DSW for providing bags and picking up loads,” said Gounden.

He added that it’s people like these that give them motivation to continue serving the community in the best possible way.

They look forward to hosting more clean-ups in the future.
