Pollution cleared at Ezimbokodweni River mouth

The rubbish piles up at the beach every time there are heavy rains.

A TEAM from Sapphire Coast Tourism and Clean Surf Project conducted a clean-up at the Ezimbokodweni River mouth near the Amanzimtoti Golf Club recently.

Anton Kieck, who is a photographer, and who witnessed the pollution, said the litter had piled up after the recent rains and was carried down to the beach from upstream.

“This is what happens every time there is heavy rain. Tons of plastic and household waste wash down the river to the sea. Thanks to some great warriors of our community, there is an effort to clean up, but their resources and support are very limited. Everyone that lives on our beautiful coastline needs to take some effort and chip in, otherwise, we may lose the battle,” said Kieck.

The workers who were involved in the clean-up are Vumani Mkhize, Sizwe Ngcobo, Njabulo Ngcobo, Fanisiwe Mbutho, Philisiwe Mkhize, Siyabonga Hlengwa, Thokozani Ngcobo, Nombuso Shabalala, Nosihle Shibase, Sinenhlanhla Hlatshwayo, Ayanda Bhengu, Siyethemba Mhlongo, and Siyabonga Cele. The Sapphire Coast Tourism and Clean Surf Project teams also recently conducted clean-ups at the beaches of Illovo, Pipeline, and Msimbazi River in Karridene.

eThekwini Municipality has, in the meantime, called on all residents to join hands in keeping all public spaces clean because the waste that is discarded inappropriately ends up in the rivers after heavy rains. It said in a statement that people can start beautifying their verges and backyards.

“As a community, you are encouraged to ‘adopt a spot’ in your neighbourhood and invite neighbours to clean and maintain it. Tag us to share your before and after pictures on our social media platforms. Let us work together to keep eThekwini clean,” it said.
