Isipingo police clamp down on second-hand dealers

A well-established dealer was recently arrested and fined for non-compliance, with SAPS urging the public to help break the cycle.

DURING a recent joint-operation by Isipingo police and security organisations, illegal activities were identified within the second-hand dealer industry within the area.

Isipingo police station communication officer, Warrant Officer Pam Kisten, said these activities included the trade of stolen goods, illicit drugs, counterfeit products and prohibited items.

“The illicit trade was facilitated through various means, such as inadequate or dual record-keeping and collusion between certain dealers and identified criminal elements. The existing regulations governing second-hand dealers are relatively comprehensive in most areas. However, there were several inconsistencies in their compliance and interpretation,” she said.

Kisten said SAPS have nationally undertaken various actions to address the issue of illegal activities within the second-hand dealer sector.

“These actions include conducting targeted operations, increasing surveillance, and establishing dedicated units or task forces to investigate related crimes. Additionally, collaboration with other relevant agencies, such as customs and tax authorities, has been initiated to enhance information sharing and enforcement efforts,” she said.

Kisten added that a well-established dealer in the area was recently arrested and fined for non-compliance.

“Repeat offenders will be closely monitored, and their permits revoked or criminal charges instituted should they continue to operate against the law,” she said.

Kisten also said public awareness and reporting is essential to breaking the cycle. “Every person needs to ensure the items they buy are legitimately sourced, instead of feeding the problem by buying cheap products off the street. Do your bit, for a safer neighbourhood,” she concluded.
