From Toti to the snow-capped mountains

Some locals did not want to miss the chance of experiencing snow – some of them for the first time.

A NUMBER of Amanzimtoti snow chasers could not let a chance of playing in the snow pass them by earlier this week as some parts of the province experienced a brutal cold front.

Some drove to the Drakensberg, which is where Warner Beach resident Gavin Welsh and his family went, while others went to the Midlands.

“On July 10, we were in Sani Pass when we saw that it was snowing. We gathered a few mates, and we drove up the mountains where we found ourselves in a beautiful wonderland. It was amazing,” said Gavin.

Sani Pass is next to the South African border with Lesotho, and the area experiences snow and sub-zero temperatures every year.

Amanzimtoti couple Jenna Edwards and Malcolm Rudman decided to take a spontaneous trip in the afternoon of July 10.

“Once we got word it was snowing near Nottingham Road in the Midlands, we booked accommodation, packed our bags and made our way there for the night,” said Jenna.

Early the next morning, the couple made their way towards the snowy mountains where they were met with temperatures reaching -2 degrees and a snowman that someone had built.

Chantal and Mark Burnage took their two little girls near Star Dam in the Drakensberg to play in the snow for the first time.

“It was the third-time lucky as we have been snow hunting before but never gotten close enough. We saw the forecast on the night of Sunday, July 9 and took the girls up from Toti to go look for snow. Our eldest, Sienne (6), loved rolling in the snow while our youngest, Savannah (2), was not a fan of the cold and opted to watch from inside the car,” said Chantal.

Despite taking a detour due to road closures, once they headed closer to Star Dam, she said the snow was falling onto the car, making it a magical winter wonderland. “The girls had some snowball fights and made a snowman until their hands were freezing. They warmed up with some hot chocolate before we made our way back home,” said Chantal.
