5 School Takeover comes to Amanzimtoti High School

The school was the first to be visited by 5FM for their Youth Month activations aimed at interacting with learners and bringing the community together.

IN celebration of Youth Month in June, 5FM have been broadcasting their 5 School Takeover live from various schools in South Africa, with Amanzimtoti High School being the first.

The school’s Vanda Chittenden said 5FM embarked on a competition where learners phoned in and told the radio station why their school is the best. “We were one of five schools in the country that was chosen. The learner that entered was Yuvathi Ramanund in Grade Eight,” she said.

The 5FM senior producer, Reo Reddy, said the goal of this month’s activations is to interact with the youth and bring the community together.

At the 5 School Takeover are Shannon Papenfus of Hampson Suzuki Scottburgh, learners Nalediphehello Komane and Ntondwenhle Mrwetyana and Stephanie Barnardt, host of 5FM mid-mornings.

The day, which started early on June 15, was powered by Hampson Suzuki Scottburgh and was filled with fun, interactive activities and interviews. Vanda said Yuvathi and her family were interviewed, prefects were chosen to take part in study finds, the cast of Shrek the Musical hosted a sing-a-long and the three main cast members were interviewed.

The school’s head girl, Taite Nipper, was also interviewed for a second time that week for a more in-depth interview. The ‘pants on fire’ segment saw one of the teachers telling a story, with people having to guess if it was the truth or a lie.

For the headmaster’s interview, Hein Kapp was asked about the school’s single best achievement/activity that has changed people’s lives, and throughout the morning, Suzuki took learners for a test drive.

Amanzimtoti High School learner Tristan Fife.

One of the most inspirational moments was the school’s toastmaster, Tristan Fife, in Grade 11, who gave a phenomenal four-minute speech on ‘the significance of Youth Month’ which he wrote the day before. “He focused on what it means to be a young South African and their experiences in today’s world,” she said.

Vanda said the day ended with the school shouting war cries on air. “It was an absolutely brilliant morning, filled with excitement. It was such a pleasure to host the 5FM cast,” she said
