Amanzimtoti designer creates ‘out of this world’ ensembles

She is one of six designers in the line-up for this year's Invited Designer Showcase at the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

AMANZIMTOTI fashion designer Madelain Clark has been invited to showcase her work at this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July which takes place today, July 1.

Clark, with more than a decade of showcases behind her, is one of six trailblazing designers in the line-up for this year’s Invited Designer Showcase presented by Durban Fashion Fair. Race-day fashion is a highlight of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, and this year’s theme, unveiled by Gold Circle and Hollywoodbets is ‘Out of this World’.

According to a statement by Hollywoodbets, themes are launched as poems each year. “This year’s one hints at the stargates that transport us into a mysterious world far beyond our imagination. Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event will feature a stellar line-up of top equines and a star-studded cast of punters, celebrities and designers at play, coupled with entertainment and hospitality on a cosmic scale,” it read.

In the space of a week, Clark interpreted, designed and materialised two race-day ensembles as well as a showstopper, which was showcased inside the games arcade at Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

“Looking at other designers’ pieces, you can see they are vastly different as we all had our own interpretation and vision,” she said.

Some of the elements she focused on were metallics with a black, silver and grey colour palette, with models all wearing masks for a futuristic feel.

She said, “I drew inspiration from beautiful things that inspire me personally – dark night skies, bright shiny stars and the absolute unknown of a universe that reaches far beyond us humans. I let my imagination run wild and created a range of how I visualise the theme to be – extraterrestrial meets human meets fashion. The challenge was to create futuristic pieces that are on trend, wearable and still stylish.”

Clark said she hopes to take people on a galactical fashion venture that will be an ‘out of this world’ experience.
