Stakeholders join forces for Jona Vaughan

The home relies on the goodwill of the community for supplies to keep going on a day-to-day basis and to feed its residents.

A RECENT fact-finding meeting between eThekwini Municipality executive member and member of the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti, Lion André Beetge, and service provider Durban & Coastal Mental Health, has led to local service organisations agreeing to unite in their efforts to better serve Jonah Vaughan Home for the Handicapped.

This after a forum was established that includes Durban & Coastal Mental Health, the parents’ association and the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti, to better coordinate the needs of the home and a collective effort to address ways of securing donations and supplies.

While the home does get a small grant from Durban & Coastal Mental Health, it relies heavily on supplies donated by Good Samaritans.

Lion Beetge said that while the Lions, the Masons and the Rotary have already agreed to the united approach, it will be extended to include other care and volunteer platforms to ensure that not only duplication donations are delivered, but indeed that donations are solicited in line with actual needs identified from within.

“We will, by virtue of the local press and social media platforms, be appealing to the local community for donations to be delivered to a central point, as opposed to deliveries being made directly to the home. Not only will this create an organised approach, but it will also assist in audit processes of what is received and dispersed,” he said.
