Ex-councillor’s murder case postponed again

It has been revealed that some of the accused plan to plead guilty.

THE case against five men who were arrested for the murder of former Ward 90 councillor, Sunil Brijmohan, which was supposed to have been heard at the Chatsworth Regional Court on June 14, has been postponed to July 3.

The reason given at the court for the postponement was that due to staff shortages and other challenges at the Department of Correctional Services, the accused could not be transported to court.

Brijmohan (46) was shot and killed in Amanzimtoti on his property in October 2022. A surveillance video of the incident showed two men walking towards Brijmohan. As he turned and walked to meet them, he was shot at point-blank range in the face and body, dying at the scene. Four men were later arrested earlier this year and started appearing at the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court before the case was moved to Chatsworth.

Community activist Raymond Sakloo said the family and friends of Brijmohan will continue to demand justice for the murder. He also said the state prosecution team has given a notification that advised that two of the five accused plan to plead guilty.

“Our main concern is that the people who planned, organised and financed the killing of Sunil have not been charged or arrested because those charged were just carrying our instructions or directives of the masterminds behind his killing. We call on the residents of Isipingo to join our team in court to ensure that the masterminds also join the five other perpetrators in court,” said Sakloo.
