Protests close N2 near Isipingo

The area near the old airport has seen a number of protests by people living in a transit camp in Isipingo.

MOTORISTS have been asked to exercise caution when travelling on the N2 highway after protests between the old airport and Lamontville disrupted traffic. In the morning, southbound traffic was backed up to Higginson Road and on the south, all the way to Galleria.

The protests started before daylight when tires were burned on the road, leading police to close it to traffic while the situation was being diffused.

The area has seen an increasing number of protests by dwellers of the Isipingo transit camp who are unhappy with the pace of the process of relocating them to proper houses. The camp was established in 2009 after informal settlements in Isipingo and Umlazi were demolished ahead of the 2010 World Cup which was held in South Africa.

The road was later opened to traffic after the protesters were dispersed.
