A walk through Umbogavango Nature Reserve

KEY role-players at the Umbogavango Nature Reserve hosted a nature walk, talk and potjie recently, to create awareness about its environmental education centre.

The reserve and resource centre, located in the AECI premises at Umbogintwini Industrial Complex, have been sponsored by them for 32 years.

Its other networking role-players are the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa), Rotary Club of Amanzimtoti, and the Amanzimtoti Country Club and Conservancy.

Wessa acts as the project manager and coordinator, as a volunteer group, under its KZN region and Upper South Coast branch.

Chairperson of Wessa KZN Margaret Burger said, “The goal of the Umbogavango programme is to enable learners from disadvantaged schools in the area to experience nature in an environmental education setting, guided by environmental graduates who are gaining experience in becoming educators.”

This year, there are 4 480 beneficiaries (Grade 4 to 7), 117 days of environmental education programmes, two interns, and 25 to 30 local schools supported. One learner per day can be sponsored at R150. It also covers transport fees, lunch packs and attendance.

The programme will run from March to the end of November. There is currently only enough funds until the end of June.
