Domino team equips aspiring entrepreneurs with skills

The one-day training course imparts basic business skills and provides attendees with a box of personal hygiene products to kickstart their business.

TWENTY small business owners and budding entrepreneurs attended a one-day training course hosted by Domino Business and Domino Foundation at Kingsway Church International.

This was the first time the Business-in-a-Box course was held in the south of Durban. It aimed at imparting basic business skills to aspiring entrepreneurs and challenged them to think out of the box on how to run effective and profitable enterprises.

The day was presented by a team from Domino Business comprising one of its staff and three from Domino Foundation. The participants were eager to learn about foundational business practices, such as marketing, cost and selling prices, gross profit, the value of a loyal customer and the basics of selling.

The Domino Foundation’s communications officer, Rowan Phillips, said all participants have a connection with the foundation’s nutrition programme in Amanzimtoti.

“Some of the participants were from the early childhood development centres which are supplied with sandwiches from our Toti kitchens, while others were already running small businesses and looking to hone their entrepreneurial skills,” said Phillips.

Cheryl Dann, leader of the Toti nutrition team, said the training will equip them with essential skill sets and the importance of sound business practice. She described the day as varied in its approach.

“The morning started off with an extremely interactive, hands-on business game. While videos and discussion groups around topics, such as understanding the customer, defining the target market, knowing your competition and saving and pivoting your business, took place in the afternoon,” said Dann.

The results of the game were announced at the end of the day, and the attendees were presented with certificates and starter packs from the Hallelujah personal hygiene product line for them to start their businesses.
