MOOI Hawens Home for the Aged recently hosted courses for their nursing staff, cleaners and the public – an ancillary healthcare course and a course on how to provide care to a frail person.
The Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) ancillary course has been hosted through the South Coast Nursing Training School for the past 12 years.

Mooi Hawens care manager Doreen Vosloo said, “The students enjoy the courses very much and gain knowledge on how to care for the elderly in their community. I can see the heart and passion that goes into it,” she said.

The students received a study guide with different subjects, which include anatomy, changes of the body with age, special equipment to use, as well as an introduction to first aid. Vosloo said they also learn about the different abscesses you can get, especially as an elderly person.
The students then do a 120-hour or 160-hour practical that is required for the respective course, in the home and under supervision. The practical includes bed baths, feeding, checking blood pressure, getting a frail person up, and so forth.
