Drowning man rescued in Ilfracombe

A resident of Ilfracombe sprang into action after hearing screams coming from the beach.

KWENAMA Ntuli from Ilfracombe became the talk of his community recently after rescuing a drowning person at Ilfracombe Beach.

Ntuli was sitting in his yard with a friend when he heard screams coming from the direction of the beach. His house is about 100m away from the shore.

“A young man who had been visiting my neighbour had gone down to swim with other people, but unfortunately, he was swept away by a strong current,” said Kwenama.

After being alerted that someone was drowning, he raced to the beach and jumped into the water and swam towards the drowning person. “I was able to get hold of him, and I started to make my way to the shore,” he said.

Lifeguards from the nearby Umgababa Beach quickly arrived as someone had made an emergency call and started administering first aid to the person. Paramedics later arrived, and the patient was transported by helicopter to a hospital for further medical care.
