Snare Aware educates school’s environmental club

The organisation arranged for the primary school learners and their parents to do an iNaturalist bioblitz through the reserve while learning about snares and their impact on wildlife.

SNARE AWARE recently gave a talk to Amanzimtoti Primary School’s environmental club, to help educate and create awareness about the issue of snares and their impact on wildlife.

According to a member, whose identity cannot be disclosed due to safety concerns, it was a privilege to have the opportunity to shape young minds – and at the beautiful setting of Umbogovango Nature Reserve.

“The children and their parents were set to do an iNaturalist bioblitz through the reserve,” said the member.
A bioblitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible.

The member said, “It’s always interesting to give a talk to young children as you never know what kind of questions you will get. It always keeps you on your toes. We were tested with some great questions. The talk was very well received, with many children lining up to get ‘caught’ by a snare and ‘feel’ what it’s like to be trapped by a horrible wire snare.”

The Snare Aware team love doing talks and encourage schools, conservancies, organisations or forums to reach out.

“Thank you to Cherise Acker from Endangered Wildlife Trust for the invitation and opportunity, and well done for getting so many excited children into nature. Our team did a quick sweep around the reserve and were pleased to give it the all-clear,” concluded the member.
