Community-driven workshop aims to equip and empower

Through in-depth training, the workshop equipped and empowered community volunteers.

THE Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum (ACPF) co-hosted a community-driven social crime-prevention facilitator training workshop together with Sparrow Trust at the Amanzimtoti police station recently.

The aim of the workshop was to equip and empower community volunteers. The team also celebrated the launch of the new social crime-prevention presentation and resources which were developed by Sparrow Trust, a local counter-human-trafficking organisation.

Founding director Estelle van Eeden said, “The four presentations include human-trafficking prevention, the ‘Too cool to be cruel’ presentation, focusing on bullying and cyberbullying, as well as the cyber safety and substance-abuse presentations. The material is to be used to reach primary and high school students and can be adapted to empower parents and caregivers.”

During the day’s proceedings, the ACPF unpacked the role of social crime-prevention activities as a key crime-prevention mechanism along with the law. “Amanzimtoti police station’s domestic violence and gender-based violence coordinator, Sergeant Nondumiso Mncwabe, outlined SAPS’ victim-friendly services and procedures for reporting crimes against children. The Department of Social Development probation officer, Cindy Mgcobo, spoke on children in conflict with the law and the help available to children struggling with substance abuse,” said Van Eeden.

The workshop participants were then educated on presentation skills and key information on each topic, which will inform their work going forward.

“Together, through teamwork and partnerships at local level, the ACPF looks forward to engaging our youth as we strive to protect the leaders of tomorrow,” concluded Van Eeden.
